In Buriram, Pattana, in Thailand’s north, Singapore volunteers are working with teachers at the Mechai Pattana School as well as education officials and teachers from surrounding provinces, to develop subject knowledge and teaching techniques in Math, English and Science.
Thailand is also where, at a gathering in Bangkok with fellow alumni of the SIF-Asean Student Fellowship programme, Sitthimet Solthong, one of scores of Thai alumni, decided to share an opportunity to develop a library at the Siphouttabat Buddhist Temple School in Luang Phrabang, Laos.
The Thai and Lao fellows present all got behind the project, which we were happy to support. The result was not just a library that caters to novice monks who are mostly poor children, but that stands as testimony to the power of friendship and cross-community collaboration.
