The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is looking for a dynamic individual to work with a NGO based in Dili, Timor Leste, to provide quality education for the hearing-impaired Timorese through the use of proper international Sign Language and to train local Timorese with potential to be teachers for the hearing-impaired.

The SIF’s partner NGO in Dili is the Agape Foundation for Asia Pacific Ministries. Agape Foundation strives to work in tandem with the government of Timor Leste to uplift the welfare of the hearing-impaired in the country by providing them with a wholesome environment of learning and strengthening their intellectual, social and emotional capacity. It also facilitates the involvement of the hearing-impaired in meaningful community activities which aim to enhance their employment and educational opportunities as well as their family and social relations. In support of its mission, Agape Foundation runs the Agape Deaf International School in Dili for the hearing-impaired.

Project description

The volunteer will work with Agape Foundation to:

  • Teach sign language, writing and numbers to the hearing-impaired
  • Teach basic sign language to the family of the hearing-impaired
  • Train local Timorese with the potential to be teachers for the hearing-impaired
  • Assist Agape Foundation to plan, implement and evaluate activities and programmes for the students at Agape Deaf International School
  • Where necessary, teach basic computer use to the hearing-impaired students

Selection criteria:

For this assignment, we seek a volunteer who:

  • Is a Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Resident
  • Has a basic university degree, preferably in Special Education with a specialisation in Hearing Impairment
  • Has at least 3 years of experience working with the hearing-impaired
  • Is mature, flexible, adaptable and has a pleasant personality with strong interpersonal skills
  • Has a strong commitment to training and development

English-Bengali Interpreters

As part of its capacity building work, the SIF will be sponsoring and hosting a study visit in Singapore for four Early Childhood teachers from Ullon Early Childhood Education Centres, from the rural villages around Ullon in West Bengal, India. They will train at the NTUC Early Childhood Centres — My First Skool, in Singapore from 12–24 July 2009.

We are currently looking for volunteer English-Bengali interpreters who will be able to assist the Indian teachers from 13–17 July and 20–24 July (10 working days), 9am to 6pm. Volunteers will be rotated depending on the number of working days that they are available.

The SIF will provide daily transport and meal allowance.

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is looking for a dynamic individual to participate in conducting a feasibility study on developing a whole-school approach towards developing child-centred learning for selected primary schools in Hyderabad, India.

Job description

The volunteer will work in collaboration with the SIF project manager to:

  • visit the selected primary schools and observe the school environment
  • conduct activities to assess pupils’ needs and the capacity of the school management and teachers for change management
  • propose strategies for a whole-school approach towards developing child-centred learning for the selected primary schools

Selection criteria

For this assignment, we seek volunteers who are:

  • Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Basic university degree / bachelors in education or postgraduate diploma in education
  • Have at least 3 years of experience managing a school
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to develop a child-centred learning environment in a school  

The individual would be required to complete a feasibility report at the end of the trip. This feasibility study would determine whether future training programmes for selected India’s principals / vice principals / HODs / teachers would take place.

Volunteers will be tasked to create an environment for local school teachers to effectively employ ICT in child-centred learning.

  • Conduct training in the use of ICT resources to design lesson plans
  • Conduct training in creating simple e-learning resources
  • Observe classes conducted by participants and provide feedback for improvement

Data Analyst

Description of Assignment

The volunteer will work with the host agency to:

  • Analyse the laboratory’s data in collaboration with its technical advisors from Canada and U.S.A
  • Train local staff in analysing data and explaining rational behind analysis
  • Facilitate open communication between local staff and technical advisors
  • Understand, learn and perform laboratory technician work to assist in overall work
  • Actively participate in laboratory’s other activities in promoting primary health and importance of hygiene, taking a proactive role if necessary

Requirements

For this assignment, the volunteer should have:

  • Singapore or Permanent Resident status
  • Basic university degree, preferably in the sciences
  • At least 3 years’ experience in data analysis using statistical tools such as MS Excel (or SPSS).
  • Some experience working with adult learners in a developing country (particularly in Asia), would be an advantage
  • Familiarity with quality drinking water issue is a value-add
  • Present or past teaching experience in chemistry and statistical analysis subjects at junior college and polytechnic are welcomed
  • Shortlisted candidates may be invited to sit for a practical test on MS Excel and SPSS

English Language Teacher

Description of Assignment

The volunteer will work with the host agency to:

  • Teach decision-making officials and staff of the International Relations Department and the organising committee of the SEA Games English Language skills in:
    • Official letter writing, documentation, notes taking, minute-taking
    • English conversational and communication skills
  • To create a curriculum in teaching English which will be used by a core group of Laotian trainees to teach other Laotian counterparts

Requirements

For this assignment, the volunteer should have:

  • A basic Degree;
  • At least 5 years of teaching experience in English Language;
  • Experience in working with adult learners and managing English Language training would be preferred.
