Exploring Singapore’s wetlands

Singapore is better known for its urban infrastructure than its biodiversity. To introduce our friends of the international community to Singapore’s rich ecosystem, the Singapore International Foundation (SIF) organised a tour of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and an informal dialogue on Singapore biodiversity conservation.

On 12 March 2011, over 30 of our international friends – from children to working professionals, participated in a dialogue session with Mr Wong Tuan Wah, Director, Conservation, National Parks Board (NParks)  to learn more about Singapore’s nature areas, parks and nature reserves, as well as the conservation efforts to date.

Following this was a tour of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore’s first ASEAN heritage park. Taking a break from the city, the group spent close to 2 hours surrounded by nature exploring the reserve’s wildlife.

The programme was interesting and enlightening, providing “foreigners in Singapore a chance to learn and understand different sides of the city.“ said Kavita Choudhry, Head – Southeast Asia Region, Confederation of Indian Industry.

The SIF Singapore Discovery Weekends shares, with the international community, insights to our way of life – Singapore’s people, places, policies and practices. These weekend visits and dialogues with local experts seek to promote understanding and develop relationships between Singapore and world communities.
