Direct Service Projects – Water for Life (Kampong Speu)

Description of Assignment

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is looking for a group of individuals to volunteer for its Water for Life (WFL) project in Kampong Speu which is around 50 km away from Phnom Penh and considered one of the poorest provinces in Cambodia.

The main objective of the WFL project is to meet the vital basic need of clean water for daily living, and in so doing, reduce the mortality rate attributed to water-borne diseases and improve the overall quality of life.

Launched in 2010 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, the WFL project has successfully taken off.  With the help of volunteers through the installation of bio-sand water filters, clean drinking water is now accessible to the villagers in Dan Run and Dam Diek commune.

Spreading its wings further, the SIF will be launching a three years project in partnership with Soa Sary Foundation (SSF) in engaging volunteers to help improve the water sanitation, livelihood and environment in the villages of Kampong Speu.

Requirements

Depending on resource availability and needs assessment, volunteers may be involved in one or more of the following activities:
Water and Sanitation

  • Installing of the water filters to the designated village households
  • Conducting basic health and hygiene education for the villagers
  • Assist in building borehole wells with hand pump
  • Build simple latrines

Livelihood and Environment

  • Work with villagers to setup organic and bottle farming so as to help villagers generate additional income
  • Reforestation of community
  • Institute garbage recycling programme in the communities
  • Construct garbage bins for households in the villages

The volunteers must be:

  • At least 18 years old and above
  • Medically fit for overseas travel
  • Adaptable and able to manage socio-cultural diversity
  • A team player with good interpersonal skills

Support Provided

SIF will guide the volunteer team leader in coordinating with volunteers to meet all administrative and logistic needs. Aside from being the liaison between the overseas community and the volunteers, the SIF will also conduct a pre-departure briefing to ensure a safe and enriching volunteering experience. An SIF staff will also be assigned on the actual volunteer trip.

Description of Assignment

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is partnering Middletown Rhode Island Rotary Club, U.S.A and Angkor Hospital for Children in a three-year clean water project in Siem Reap Cambodia. Through the installation of bio-sand water filters in rural households in Dan Run and Dam Dek communes, the project aims to bring clean drinking water to villagers. This project is sponsored by Deutsche Bank and Ngee Ann Development Pte Ltd.

For a more holistic approach, Water for Life will also look into improving the services at a rural health centre and provide basic literacy programmes targeted at women in the villages.

Requirements

We require a minimum group of 6-12 volunteer members for each volunteer trip, which will span at least three days. All volunteers are required to finance their own volunteer trips.

Depending on resource availability and needs assessment, volunteers may be involved in one or more of the following activities:

  • Learn how to assemble and manufacture bio-sand filters
  • Install water filters in village households
  • Conduct basic hygiene education on villagers
  • Refurbishment of health centre such as painting works etc.

The volunteers must be:

  • At least 18 years old and above
  • Medically fit for overseas travel
  • Adaptable and willing to serve in a challenging physical environment
  • Able to manage socio-cultural diversity
  • Open to sharing and learning
  • A team player with good interpersonal skills
  • Physically fit to carry out manual work

Support Provided

Nursing Trainers / Senior Nurses

Description of Assignment

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is looking for nursing trainers / senior nurses to work with a rural nurses training institute to enhance its training methodology for greater effectiveness, resulting in better application and integration of the skills and knowledge received. Many of these trained nurses will be deployed back at the villages or at the local hospitals. The applicant should be able to contribute valuable insights relating to nursing training as well as sharing of best practices from the medical context of Singapore.

The volunteer will:

  • Work with the Sunshine Health Care to improve the training methodology for training nurses (e.g. introduce training aids, on-the-job training etc.)
  • Enhance the means of assessments to verify the competency of the trainee nurses
  • Share best practices from the medical context of Singapore

Requirements

For this assignment, we seek volunteers who:

  • Are Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Have directly been involved in nursing training at a basic level (certificate level)
  • Have experiences in carrying out health promotion, health education and antenatal care, as well as running vaccination and infant care programmes
  • Have some leadership experience in leading a team of nurses

Description of Assignment

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is looking for an English teacher to work with the teachers and students at the Parikrma Humanity Foundation. The volunteer will teach English, Mathematics and Science to primary/secondary students as well as work with teachers to develop enhanced ways to teach English in an interesting way. The volunteer is required to live and work with the local community for a period of 6 months.

The volunteer will work with the Parikrma Humanity Foundation to:

  • Teach English, Mathematics and Science to students at the Primary/Secondary level
  • Co-develop new teaching methodologies with teachers in teaching English in an interesting way
  • Co-develop manual/teaching aids to result in better engagement of students in the classroom settings

Requirements

For this assignment, we seek volunteer who:

  • Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Possess basic university degree, bachelor in education or postgraduate diploma in education
  • Have at least 3 years of English teaching experience

Description of Assignment

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is looking for a preschool English teacher to work with the teachers and students at the Faculty of Early Childhood Education of Vietnam's National College of Education. The volunteer will teach students as well as guide the teachers in curriculum planning and to develop an English Club. The volunteer is required to live and work with the local community for a period of 6 months.

The volunteer will work with the Faculty of Early Childhood Education to:

  • Improve the teaching methodology for teachers in preschool English (e.g. introduce training aids, etc.)
  • Improve the English communication skills of teachers
  • Teach preschool English classes

Requirements

For this assignment, we seek volunteers who:

  • Are Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Possess basic university degree, bachelor in education or postgraduate diploma in education (a certificate in early childhood education will be an added advantage)
  • Have at least 3 years of English teaching experience, preferably in early childhood or preschool teaching
  • Are mature and adaptable with strong interpersonal skills

Teacher & Curriculum Developer for the Hearing-Impaired

Description of Assignment

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is looking for a dynamic individual to work with an NGO based in Dili, Timor Leste, to provide quality education for the hearing-impaired citizens of Timor Leste through the use of proper international Sign Language and to train local Timorese with potential to be teachers for the deaf. This assignment will build on the work that the current SIF in-field volunteer in Dili will have developed by the time he completes the assignment in early 2011.

The NGO – Agape Foundation for Asia Pacific Ministries – strives to work in tandem with the government of Timor Leste to uplift the welfare of the hearing-impaired in the country by providing them with a wholesome environment of learning and strengthening their intellectual, social and emotional capacity. The NGO also facilitates the involvement of the hearing-impaired in meaningful community activities which aim to enhance their employment and educational opportunities as well as their family and social relations. In support of its mission, Agape Foundation runs the Agape Deaf International School in Dili for the hearing-impaired.

The volunteer will work with Agape Foundation to:

  • Teach the hearing-impaired sign language, writing and numbers
  • Teach basic sign language to the family of the hearing-impaired
  • Train local Timorese with the potential to be teachers for the hearing-impaired
  • Plan, implement and evaluate activities and programmes for the students at Agape Deaf International School
  • Conduct home visits for the hearing-impaired and their family
  • Equip the hearing-impaired students with interpersonal and other social skills
  • Where necessary, teach basic computer use to the hearing-impaired students

Requirements

For this assignment, we seek a volunteer who:

  • Is a Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Resident
  • Has a basic university degree, with diploma or qualification in special education or education for the hearing-impaired
  • Has at least 3 years of experience teaching, nurturing and working with the hearing-impaired
  • Is mature, flexible and has strong adaptive and interpersonal skills
  • Has a strong commitment towards uplifting lives of the underprivileged through education

Description of Assignment

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is seeking a physiotherapist / occupational therapist / speech therapist / special education teacher to work with the Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CCAMH) to build the capacity of practitioners working with the population with disabilities. The CCAMH works with children and their families to address the cause and effect of disabilities, particularly neuro-psychiatric as well as developmental disabilities in the CCAMH centre, as well as through community-based and school-based programmes.

The volunteer will work with the CCAMH to:

  • mentor and coach the practitioners in the CCAMH as well as other NGOs in his/her specific discipline
  • supervise and guide CCAMH staff to coach staff from other NGOs
  • enhance the existing programmes run by the CCAMH

The volunteer will be based in Takhmau, a rural town in Cambodia for one year.

Requirements

For this assignment, we seek volunteers who:

  • Are Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Hold a Degree /Diploma in the respective specialist field of physiotherapy / occupational therapy / speech therapy / special education
  • Have at least three years’ experience in their respective fields
  • Are mature and adaptable, with strong interpersonal skills
  • Have a strong commitment to training and development
Additional experience in these areas will be desirable:
  • Mentoring at workplace
  • Working in multi-disciplinary settings
  • Working with children and adolescents between infant to eighteen years of age
  • Knowledge and skills in planning, implementing and monitoring capacity-building programme
  • Knowledge and skills in use of information technology in disability sector

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is looking for an English Language teacher to teach English to Lao government officials at the Institute of Foreign Affairs in Vientiane City, Lao PDR. The volunteer will teach these students directly, as well as guide the teachers in curriculum planning and pedagogy. The volunteer is required to live and work with the local community for a minimum period of 6 months or up to a year.

The volunteer will work with the Institute of Foreign Affairs to:

  • Improve the teaching methodology and pedagogy for teachers (eg. introduce training aids, etc) in teaching English as a foreign language
  • Improve the English communication skills of teachers
  • Teach government officials the English Language, at three different levels of basic, intermediate and advance

Requirements

For this assignment, we seek volunteer who:

  • Is a Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Resident
  • Possesses basic university degree, bachelor in education or postgraduate diploma in education
