Above and Beyond

13 Jun 2013

Not content with just volunteering for our Water for Life project in Siem Reap, Cambodia, a team of nine SIF volunteers took the initiative to contribute even more.

Jo Fen Tai and her group of volunteers were in Siem Reap, Cambodia, in January to build water filters for villagers as part of the Singapore International Foundation’s (SIF’s) Water for Life* project.

The team coordinator and the group of nine volunteers from the Ministry of National Development, together with two of her friends, did just that.

However, they were also inspired to go beyond their official volunteering tasks.

They organised a donation drive and pooled efforts to collect 16 kilogrammes of clothes, and raised S$2,000 for SIF’s Cambodian partner, Angkor Hospital for Children.

The group also purchased 500 sets of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, detergent and shampoo and 200 pairs of sandals from a local Siem Reap market. They donated these items to Water for Cambodia and to SIF’s other local partner, Angkor Hospital for Children.

For these volunteers, the trip turned out to be an uplifting experience of going above and beyond.

*Started in 2010, Water for Life is a signature SIF project which aims to improve the quality of life of rural villages by improving access to clean drinking water and cutting down water-borne diseases.
