Project name: Water for Life (Kampong Speu), Cambodia
Host partner: Sao Sary Foundation, Kampong Speu Provincial Government
Singapore partner: Ngee Ann Development Pte Ltd
Duration: 2012 - 2017
Outcomes: We installed 1,765 bio-sand filters (BSF), 18 borehole wells and 15 latrines across three districts and 12 communes in Kampong Speu province, providing 44,302 villagers with convenient access to clean drinking water. We also constructed a community hall, refurbished two health centres, and conducted training in basic hygiene, feminine hygiene, and first aid. Following this project, 91 per cent of villagers reported an overall improvement in their health after using the BSFs, while 74 per cent indicated a marked improvement, including a reduction in gastro-intestinal disorders. These improvements had a direct impact on the improved school attendance of the community’s children, and the economic health of households due to less time and money spent on treating ailments.
