Project name: Emergency Obstetrics and Paediatrics in Vientiane, Laos

Host partner: Mother and Child Hospital, New Children’s Hospital (Vientiane)

Singapore partner: KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and SingHealth

Project aim: To improve maternal and child healthcare and help reduce maternal and infant deaths in Laos.

Duration: 2010 - 2014

Outcomes: This project provided Laotian doctors, nurses and medical officers with training in obstetric and paediatric emergencies. It was led by A/Prof Ng Kee Chong, Chairman of KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital Division of Medicine and trained 85 doctors and nurses from Vientiane and other provinces in Laos. The project culminated in a reorganisation of the labour ward at the Mother and Child Hospital, to ensure greater privacy. The labour ward and A&E unit also adopted some features inspired by Singapore hospitals, such as an emergency triage area, a separate resuscitation area with a resuscitation chart, and clearly displayed guidelines in the Laotian language.
